Prevalla, the pass above Prizren
Spruce forest, deep snow in winter, and a road that climbs out of the heat of Prizren in forty minutes.
Prevalla sits at around 1,500 metres on the pass between Prizren and Brezovica. It is the closest real mountain air to a Kosovar city, which is why families have kept small timber cabins here for generations.
In winter the snow arrives in metres rather than centimetres. In summer the same slopes are meadow, and the cabins open their terraces.
What it actually is
A dispersed mountain settlement of cabins, small guesthouses and grill houses along the pass road, surrounded by spruce forest and the northern Sharr slopes.
What it feels like
Very quiet, very cold, and unusually easy to reach. In deep winter the forest muffles everything; you hear the stove and nothing else.
How FRID travels here
We use Prevalla for the first and last night of Shar Restoration — a soft landing on the way up, and a warm room and a long dinner on the way down.
