Peja, where the mountains begin
A working town at the foot of the Accursed Mountains, with a bazaar, a river and a canyon behind it.
Peja sits exactly where the plain ends and the mountains start. The Lumbardhi river runs straight out of Rugova Canyon and through the middle of the town, which is why the air here is always a few degrees cooler than the rest of Kosovo.
It is not a museum town. People shop in the bazaar, drink coffee for hours, and drive up the canyon for lunch on a Sunday. That ordinariness is the appeal.
What to see
The old bazaar with its coppersmiths and spice stalls, the Patriarchate of Peć with its thirteenth-century frescoes, the Sunday market, and the short drive to the White Drin source at Radavc.
What it feels like
Slow. Coffee is a duration, not a drink. In the late afternoon the light comes down the canyon and the whole town turns gold for half an hour.
