Gjeravica, the highest ground in Kosovo
2,656 metres, a chain of glacial lakes below it, and a view that takes in three countries.
Gjeravica is the highest peak in Kosovo and the second highest in the Accursed Mountains. The approach passes a series of small glacial lakes, the largest of which feeds the Erenik river.
It is a serious walk but not a technical one: a long day on grass, scree and old shepherd paths, usually done between late June and September.
What it actually is
A broad summit at 2,656 metres above Junik and Deçan, reached on foot from the Erenik valley. Snow patches survive into July, and the lakes below are cold enough to shorten any swim.
What it feels like
Wide and empty. On a clear day you see into Albania and Montenegro at once, and the only sound is wind over grass.

Only with a local mountain guide, only in the right season, and always with an early start and a slow pace. We treat it as one long, quiet day rather than a challenge.
