Traditional mountain villages
Stone houses, wood smoke, flija turned over embers, and a table you are not allowed to leave hungry.
The villages in the Sharr and the Accursed Mountains are where Kosovo's food and hospitality actually live. Many are half-empty in winter and full again in summer, when families return from the cities and abroad.
Nothing here is arranged for visitors, which is exactly why it works. You are a guest in a house, not a customer in a restaurant.
What you find
Timber and stone houses, wood stoves, homemade cheese and yoghurt, honey from the slope above, and flija — layer after layer of batter cooked under a saç of embers over several hours.
What it feels like
Unhurried and disarmingly warm. Coffee comes before questions, food comes before you are asked, and refusing a second plate is treated as a negotiating position.

June to September, when the villages are fullest. Winter visits are possible in the accessible valleys.
