Bjeshkët e Nemuna, the Accursed Mountains
The wildest skyline in the Balkans, and the last place in Kosovo where silence is still the default.
Bjeshkët e Nemuna — the Accursed Mountains — form the western wall of Kosovo, continuing into Albania and Montenegro. The name comes from folklore, not from danger: these were mountains people crossed on foot, in winter, with animals, and the stories reflect what that cost.
Today the range is a national park. Snow lingers in the gullies into June, the beech forest below is dense enough to swallow sound, and the summer pastures are still worked by families who move up with their herds when the grass comes.
What it actually is
A limestone massif of peaks above 2,400 metres, cut by valleys — Rugova the deepest of them — and threaded by the Peaks of the Balkans trail. Weather changes fast, water is everywhere, and even in high season you can walk for hours without meeting anyone.
What it feels like
Cold air with the smell of pine in it. Long views that do not resolve into anything man-made. Days that end early because the light drops behind the ridge, and evenings that feel much longer than they are.
How FRID travels here
Never as a summit chase. We use the lower pastures and the shepherd paths, walk in the morning, rest through the middle of the day, and keep the nights in family guesthouses at the edge of the forest.

When to visit
June to early October for high walking. Winter is beautiful but limited to the valley floors and cleared paths.
Getting there
Around two hours by road from Prishtina International Airport via Peja. FRID arranges the transfer and the mountain driver.
